Back pain can have a variety of causes that are non-traumatic, just as neck and lower back can have. However, back pain is often
associated with postural habits. Excessive weight, rounded shoulders (no matter the cause), disease processes, weight lifting
or other exercises can be enough to cause back pain.
Since the ribs are attached to the spine from the base of the neck to the
beginning of the lower back, back pain often involves the rib cage. Pain can often radiate around the rib cage or even be felt
in a stereo effect, as if it is going through the body. Back pain caused by a flattening of the normal curvature of the spine
may cause one to want to force their shoulders backward to stretch the spine into hyperextension for relief.
In any event, back
pain indicates that there is a structural problem that requires professional attention. Dr. Talmadge is experienced in determining
whether your back pain is caused by a problem with the way your spine is aligned.
