Neck pain is most often caused by improper alignment of the vertebrae in the neck. This causes abnormal peripheral nerve responses
into the muscles thereby leading to spasms, stiffness, pain and swelling.
Peripheral nerves are nerves that leave
the skull and go to your body. Everything in your body has a nerve supply. All peripheral nerves travel to their location
via the spinal cord which is surrounded by the vertebrae. If the spacing between vertebrae is compromised, nerves are often
irritated or pinched causing pain, numbness or muscle weakness. Left unattended long enough, permanent damage to the nerve may
occur.
In addition to pain and stiffness, other common symptoms that can be caused by irritation to the nerves in the neck include
headaches, dizziness, sinus problems, tinnitus, visual disturbances such as spots in your eyes or wavy lines in your field of vision, and
pain, tingling or numbness across the top of your shoulders, into your arms, hands or fingers. The higher in the neck a
problem exists, the more likely it will cause symptoms of the head, eyes or ears. The lower in the neck a problem exists, the more
likely the shoulder, arm or hand will be involved. Neck conditions that can cause these things may come from falls,
accidents, bad posture, stress, muscle weakness or even occupational duties.
Dr. Talmadge is experienced in determining if a
problem exists in the neck that may be causing your pain. If one does exist, Dr. Talmadge will recommend the appropriate treatment
to help reduce the cause. While most cases can be helped with chiropractic care, some may have to be referred to a different
specialist. Dr. Talmadge can do that for you.
Don't delay! Nerve interference can cause permanent damage if left
unattended too long.
